Erick Reyes, Class of 2009

My name is Erick Reyes and I am 25 years old. I am a Firefighter III for the Los Angeles City Fire Department (LAFD) working out of fire station 73 in Reseda. I am an alumni from Resurrection School, Class of 2009. I began attending Resurrection in the 1st grade when I moved to Boyle Heights from Korea Town in Los Angeles. I lived in Boyle Heights for a total of 20 years before moving to Santa Clarita recently.
Attending Resurrection School gave me a strong foundation in Catholicism, academics and sports. I learned good morals which I carried with me my whole life and gained a good work ethic seeing how hard my parents worked to provide for me and send me to a good school. Playing football, basketball, volleyball and baseball at Resurrection and participating in school activities is what kept me away from all the negative aspects in life. I kept busy, growing as an individual and bettering myself as much as I could in a safe and welcoming environment and (Resurrection).
Working for the City of Los Angeles has always been my dream. This dream began when I was at Bishop Mora Salesian High School. After graduating Salesian Highschool I enrolled at California State University as a full-time student where I received my Bachelors in Fire Protection and Administration. During my time in college I obtained my Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) license and was working full-time as an EMT for CARE Ambulance Services where I responded to 911 calls with LA County Fire Department. After graduating CSULA I was in the hiring process for LAFD but for the mean time I wanted to add more to my resume. I then joined a Verdugo Fire Academy which was offered at Glendale Community College. Half way through the private fire academy I was offered the position for Firefighter at LAFD. I currently been working for LAFD for a little over 2 years. This job gave me the opportunity to give back to my community. During my 1 year probation as a probationary firefighter, I was assigned to Fire Station 25 in Boyle Heights where I spent 5 months working on the Fire Engine before being transferred to my second station. For 5 months, I served the citizens of Boyle Heights and it was an amazing experience. I plan on returning in the near future to Boyle Heights to continue serving the community I love.
Remember to always work hard towards your dreams and you will accomplish them. In order to be successful in life you need to work hard, have a great attitude, continue to gain new skills and stay ambitious.
Sincerely,
Erick Reyes, Class of 2009

Dear Friends,
Resurrection Catholic School for me has embodied this ever since I attended.
When I first attended Resurrection I was in Pre-k but soon after left for another school due to lack of my parents' finances. Until one day my family received a call about help with a scholarship. We quickly accepted and went back to Resurrection. While here I was taught the importance of working with others. Resurrection fostered an environment where students were able to learn and if they needed extra help teachers were always more than willing to help after school.
Soon after Resurrection I attended Don Bosco Technical institute, where again I felt this sense of home, church and playground which is what Saint John Bosco modeled his education off.
During High School my technology of choice was Architecture Construction and Engineering where I learned hands on framing, modeling, basic engineering equations in regards to homes. I was also part of the basketball and volleyball teams for four years where I had the opportunity to be part of a league championship team.
After high school I attended Whittier College where I majored in Business Administration, with a Minor in Economics. While here I was able to take part in studying abroad in Paris and in Germany.
While at Whittier I was blessed with opportunities to work as a High School Volleyball Coach, and Interning with Paramount Pictures in Operations Finance and the international marketing finance departments where I was able to assist in the accounting of physical DVD sales, and updating the marketing budgets of the international.
Currently I am actively searching for opportunities that will allow for me to provide value through my education and experiences.
I am truly grateful to have attended Resurrection for giving me a solid educational foundation that has helped me succeed in school and life.
Sincerely,
Ezequiel Hernandez, Class of 2012
